I’d joke with her, “Girl, you a walkin’ movie!” She’d roll her eyes, say, “Shut up, cashier man.” Loved that sass—kept me goin’ through them long shifts. But damn, the sadness in her eyes? What does whoremonger mean? Historically, the word whoremonger referred to a client of a sex worker, or to a person who solicits clients for sex workers. Whoremonger is rarely used today.

As the night rolls on, the bar fills up. I’m pouring drinks, chatting with the regulars, and trying to keep my sanity. There’s this one guy, always comes in wearing a bright orange beanie. I call him “Beano.” He’s a character, always got some wild story about his adventures around Mangere.
